The Biology of Business
“Business isn’t a machine. It’s an organism.”
Healthy businesses adapt, heal, and grow like living systems — not machines built to be replaced when they break. This is the framework behind everything I build, invest in, and teach.
The Core Philosophy
Every business is alive, whether you treat it that way or not.
Most companies are run like machines: fixed parts, fixed processes, replace what breaks. It works, for a while — the same way a machine works, right up until a part fails that nobody was watching. Living systems are different. They sense changing conditions, route resources to where they’re needed, fight off threats before they spread, and grow without being told to. The Biology of Business is the practice of designing a company that behaves like the second kind of system, not the first.
The Nine Systems
Nine systems every healthy business needs — and what happens when one fails.
Sets direction, processes signals, and decides where energy goes.
The instructions every part of the business replicates, for better or worse.
Carries information from decision to action, fast enough to matter.
Delivers what every part of the business needs to keep functioning.
Identifies threats early and contains them before they spread.
Gives the organism shape and lets it bear weight without collapsing.
How the organism expands and creates more of itself.
A layer of awareness the organism didn’t have a generation ago.
The organism doesn’t function without them, no matter how good the systems are.
The Operator Behind It
Tested by running real businesses, not just writing about them
I run a construction and development company, allocate capital into multifamily real estate, and built the AI system that runs the operations layer of both. The Biology of Business isn’t a theory I formed first and applied later — it’s the pattern I kept finding while actually running things.
Speaking & Consulting
For audiences and businesses who want the framework, not the theory
I speak on the Biology of Business for teams and audiences who run real companies, and work directly with a limited number of businesses on applying it — including how AI fits as the newest system in the organism.

Where the philosophy gets applied
These aren’t four separate businesses bolted together — they’re where the same systems thinking gets tested against reality.
Commercial construction and development — the skeleton and nervous system, built by hand.

In 2009, I was fully paralyzed. What I learned rebuilding — my body, and later everything else — is where a lot of this thinking actually comes from. It’s a longer story than belongs on a homepage. I’m telling it properly, in full, soon.
